Softball Sinks Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Worcester State University softball team defeated Mass. Maritime twice Saturday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Rollins Field. Worcester State won game won 7-3 before defeating the Buccaneers 12-3 in six innings in game two.

With the wins, Worcester State improves to 5-12-1 on the season. 

 

Game 1 - Worcester State 7, Mass. Maritime 3

 

Worcester State first-year Emily Bartlett (Lowell, Mass.) threw a complete game in game one to pick up her third victory of the season. The rookie allowed just three earned runs and recorded 10 strikeouts in the win.

Worcester opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, scoring three runs on a groundout, a Liv Larson (Marlborough, Mass.) triple, and an infield single that scored Larson.

The Bucs were held in the bottom of the second though they would strike in the bottom of the third. They scored three runs to tie the game at 3-3 on a Malarie Pittsley double and a Maia Ostromecki single. That would be all the scoring for the Bucs as the Lancers went on to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning on a Samantha Stake (Worcester, Mass.) double.

Worcester State added three more runs in the sixth, taking a 7-3 lead which would end up being the final of game one.

Larson went 3-for-3 in game one with two RBI and three runs scored from the nine spot in the lineup. First-years Bartlett, Grace Adams (Leominster, Mass.), and Lauren Dube (Leominster, Mass.) all had multi-hit games for the Lancers.

 

Game 2 - Worcester State 12, Mass. Maritime 3 (6 innings)

 

Junior Jen Thorburn (Groton, Mass.) earned her first victory in a Lancer uniform, allowing just one earned run on four hits over six innings with eight strikeouts.

The Buccaneers got on the board first in game two, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. Both runs came across due to Worcester State throwing errors.

Down 2-0 in the second, the Lancers scored three times to take a 3-2 after one and a half innings played. No one scored again until the bottom of the fifth when the Bucs tied the game at 3-3 on a wild pitch that scored Turley.

The Lancers went on to score nine runs in the top of the sixth inning on seven hits and a bases loaded walk. Unable to get the game back within eight runs in the bottom of the inning, the game ended due to the eight-run rule, 12-3 in favor of the Lancers.

The Lancers put together 17 hits in game two, three apiece from Adams, Stake and sophomore Rachel Sinclair (Westminster, Mass.). Bartlett, Thorburn, and first-year Brynna Meeker (Northwood, N.H.) all had two-hit games.

 

 

 

Worcester State will be back in action on Friday afternoon for a MASCAC doubleheader against Fitchburg State. First pitch in game one on wsulancers.com/broadcast is slated for 4 p.m.
