Overtime Battle Sees Lancers Fall to Springfield

Worcester, MA- Worcester hit the road for the first time this season, squaring off against Springfield College. The Lancers looked to keep their winning alive on the road tonight and bring home another "W" on the season. Last season's match up with Springfield was a one goal game, with Worcester State edging it out at home with a game winner from Emily Floury. This year, Springfield managed to take home the one goal advantage for the win in a thrilling overtime matchup between the two teams.

The Lancers were the first on the board at the end of the first quarter with just 30 seconds remaining when Karalyn Jones pushed up the field for the Lancers and had one shot turned away before Jones was able to follow the shot and carry it to the cage to put the visitors' ahead at the end of the quarter.

Both teams were in a stalemate through a majority of the rest of the game and the Lancers carried their 1-0 lead into the final quarter looking to close out the victory after Springfield had controlled play for a majority of the third quarter. Springfield recorded five attempts on cage and six penalty corners, but the Lancers defense unit held strong, turning each opportunity.

Halfway through the fourth, Springfield's Audrey Hayes finally found a weak moment in the defense to tie up the game at 1-1. The final minutes of regulation saw each team trading scoring opportunities but neither team was able to close it out resulting in the Lancer's first overtime game of the season.

In the 63' minute of play Springfield managed to capitalize on the space and knock in the game winner. Jones led the team with the only two shots on goal for the Lancers on the night, while Madison Ferrara turned back 5 shots.

The Lancers are now 2-1 on the season and will travel to Salem State on Saturday to begin Little East Conference play at 11am.
