Lancers Drop Fourth Quarter Battle to Buccaneers

Worcester, MA- The Lancers football team hit the road for a rare Thursday night matchup, as they traveled to Buzzards Bay in a MASCAC conference affair with Mass Maritime. The Lancers are coming off a loss last friday night to Bridgewater State by a score of 35-7. The Lancers look to get back in the win column, and get to .500 in MASCAC play.

The Lancers were the first on the scoreboard as junior kicker Santiago Rodriguez-D'Atri (Leominster,MA) booted home a 24 yard field goal. Connor McTigue (Shrewsbury, MA) recovered a Maritime fumble deep in Buccaneers territory. The Lancers drive stalled, as Rodriguez-D'Atri kicked another field goal to extend the Lancers lead to 6-0. Following an interception returned to the 1 yard line, Maritime got their first of the game as they scored a touchdown, making it 7-6. The Lancers responded as senior Mike Loveless (Nashua,NH)  hit first year Lance Williams (Westerly,RI)  for a 6 yard touchdown to take the lead 12-7 into the half.

 

Worcester State got the ball to begin the second half and marched right down the field, with a combination of run and pass as junior Nico Holmes (Mansfield, MA) ran for a touchdown of 18 yards to extend the lead to 19-7. Mass Maritime responded with a long touchdown run of their own to cut the Lancers lead to 5. Following a mishap on the long snap from the Worcester State punt, Maritime recovered inside the Lancers 10 and scored a touchdown and two point conversion to take a 22-19 lead. The Lancers had a late surge but turned it over on downs at the Maritime 25 and never got the ball back.



The Blue and Gold, who now sit at (1-5, 1-3) return to the gridiron next Saturday afternoon as they head up to New Hampshire, to battle Plymouth State at noon.  Mass Maritime now sits at (2-4, 2-2) on the season.
