Women's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match at Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's volleyball team earned a split on Saturday in a non-conference tri-match at the Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse. Worcester State fell to the hosts from Wellesley College 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-15) in the opener, before knocking off Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham 3-1 (25-16, 25-16, 22-25, 25-19) in match two.

With the split, Worcester State moves to 6-14 overall on the season.

Sophomore Nicole Doerges (San Marino, Calif.) recorded a match-high 17 kills to lead the Blue past Worcester State in the opener.

Doerges added six digs while senior Meghan Shoop (Cypress, Calif.) added a match-best 13 digs. Sophomore setter Izzy Seebold (Concord, N.H.) added 39 assists, four aces and seven digs for the Blue, who also got 13 kills from junior Lauren Gedney (Huntersville, N.C.).

Sophomore Natalie Gillis (Ashland, Mass.) had seven kills and eight digs to lead the Lancers. Senior Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) chipped in with five kills, while junior Madison Kuzio (Franklin, Mass.) matched Gillis for team-high honors with eight digs.

Wellesley limited Worcester St. to a .054 attack percentage in a 25-16 first set victory. Wellesley followed with its best offensive set in the match, hitting .333 with 16 kills to take a 2-0 lead. Worcester St. opened the third set with an 11-7 lead but the Blue erased the advantage with a 10-0 run, jumping ahead 17-11 before closing out the sweep with a 25-15 win.

Worcester State hit an impressive .260 in its victory over FDU-Florham to earn its sixth victory of the season. Gillis led all players with 17 kills in the match, while sophomore Leelle Tyler (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished close behind with 15 kills of her own.

Defensively, four Lancers hit double figures in digs, led by sophomore libero Brooke Lamothe (Tewksbury, Mass.) with 13. Gillis had a double-double with 12, while freshman Camryn Burgio (Quincy, Mass.) finished with 11 and setter Sarah Ward (Townsend, Mass.) with 10.

Ward and senior Katie Gagnon (Hampden, Mass.) shared the load in the setting position, with Gagnon recording 26 assists and Ward dishing out 20 for the double-double.

The Lancers will return to action on Tuesday night for a MASCAC battle against Westfield State. First serve from John P. Brissette Court is slated for 7 p.m.
