Lancers Sweep Trailblazers in Weekend Series

Worcester, MA- The Worcester Women's Ice Hockey team (8-13-1, 6-2-1) returned home to face off again against MCLA (4-16-1, 0-8-1), after defeating the Trailblazers 7-0 in North Adams last night. Worcester is looking to seal up the ECHA top seed in the final three games of action, and a win against MCLA is pivotal to their success.

Final

Worcester State: 9

MCLA: 1

How it Happened:

First period action got hot right from the jump as left wing senior Ellen Cook (Becket, MA) gave the Lancers a 1-0 lead at just 1:48 into the first. The scoring did not stop there as right wing senior Sydney Vautour (South Hamilton, MA) got another one for the Lancers at 9:17 of the first. The Lancers tallied on two more goals in the period as left wing junior Kiersten Erickson (Broomfield, CO) and first year left wing Madelyn Franta (Superior WI) would push the Lancers out to a 4-0 lead.

As the puck drops on the second period, just 7 into the action senior right wing Katie Puumala (Framingham, MA) would strike a slapshot off the right corner to give a 5-0 Lancer lead which caused the Trailblazers to change their goaltender in an attempt to stem the offensive onslaught. Senior Ellen Cook (Beket, MA) would respond 5 minutes later with her second goal of the game to give the lancers a 6-0 lead. 10 minutes later senior left wing Cassidhe Wozniak (Turner Falls, MA) would continue the blowout as the Lancers grabbed another goal for a 7-0 lead to the Trailblazers.

The third period action began, the offensive action would slow but not cease. Vautour would snag her second goal of the game to make the blowout even bigger putting the Lancers up 8-0. But one in the period was not enough as first year defensemen Fiona Hatton (Homer, AK) would score her first career goal as a Lancer to give the Lancers a 9-0 lead. Unfortunately the shoutout would end as 5 minutes to go, sophomore goalie Kelsey Czerniawski (Chicopee, MA) would allow a lone Trailblazer goal into the net to break the shout out but not the victory as the Lancers wept the weekend series against MCLA with a 9-1 win.

The Lancers now hold a record of (9-13-1, 7-2-1) with the Trailblazers moving to (4-17-1, 0-9-1). Worcester State is back in action next Friday when they host Anna Maria on Friday at 4pm in their senior day game honoring their current senior class.
