Cold Shooting Hurts Golden Bears in 78-61 Loss to Westfield State at Home

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Sophomore newcomer Mike Gelineau scored a game-high 19 points, and freshman Lucien Fortier came off the bench to net a career-best 11, but Western New England shot only 31.1 percent from the field in a 78-61 non-conference men's basketball loss to visiting Westfield State at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house on Tuesday. The Owls, who improve to 2-0 on the road, are now 4-1 on the season, while the Golden Bears stand at 1-4 overall.

Andre King led Westfield with 16 points, followed by Grant Cooper with 13 off the bench and Jesus Sanchez had 11. Cooper added six assists and six rebounds while King had five assists.

The evening started well enough for the Golden Bears who held their largest lead of five points, 17-12, after a Fortier layin and then two free throws by graduate student Nick DeFeo (5 points) with 12 minutes and 14 seconds remaining in the first half. Westfield took its biggest advantage in the stanza on fastbreak layup by Jose Allen to end the half up 39-33. The Owls shot 51.6 percent (16-31) from the field to WNE's 36.7 (11-30) over the first 20 minutes, but the Golden Bears made five of the six 3-pointers to stay close.

In the second half, however, Westfield's up-tempo offense and full-court press generated a 20-8 run in a 7:24 span to take a commanding 59-41 lead with 12:36 left. The Owls didn't let the Golden Bears come any closer to 17 points after that.

Western New England shot 31.1 percent from the field (19-61) for the game while Westfield hit for a 49.2 clip (31-63). The Owls also held advantages of points in the paint (46-20) and bench production (40-17).

Westfield held a slim edge on the glass, 43-41, led by Allen's nine rebounds. Fortier paced WNE with nine rebounds, followed by junior Zack Askew (11 points) with eight and senior Musa Elsir (6 points), seven.

Western New England resumes action after the Thanksgiving break on Monday, Dec. 1, at Clark University in Worcester for a non-conference tilt beginning at 6 p.m.
