Lancers Makes it Three Straight with Dominant Night Over Buccaneers

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Volleyball team looked to make it three in a row tonight, taking on MASCAC opponent Mass. Maritime on Brissette Court. The Lancers dominated the night winning with a clean 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-22). This week has been a triple week for Worcester State Volleyball, going 3-0 on the week, closing out all three matches without conceding a set.

The action started early in the first set with the Lancers jumping out quickly, taking just 18 minutes of total time, Worcester State was quickly able to put away the Buccaneers, never once conceding the lead they gained from the opening serve. The second set matched the pace of the first set with the only notable change being the single tie and lead change after the opening serve point by the Buccaneers. The Lancers deftly rebounded off the service of junior Maeve Cadogan (Wilmington, MA), to quickly grab the early 8-3 lead. A stretch of services by junior Jess Rancourt (Grafton, MA) partnered with kills by first year Cassandra Millea (Orange, CT), put the set at a 15-4 point spread the, the closest Mass. Maritime managed to get in the set. Just 38 minutes into the match and the Lancers were setting themselves up for a quick win.

The Buccaneers refused to concede early, staying with Worcester State in the final set that saw a new batch of starters take the court for the Lancers. The team was faced with the tightest competition of the match, the final set seeing six tie scores and five lead changes before the Lancers were able to shake free and pull away for the victory off a service error by Mass. Maritime to end the night. Rancourt was instrumental in placing her serves in the set with Millea and sophomore Angela Colonis (Waterford, CT) working to secure the kills in the third.

Colonis led the team 42 total attacks on the night and 18 assists for a setting percentage of .429. Senior Camryn Burgio (Quincy, MA) was her consistent dominant presence on the night with 15 digs and 12 receptions for a .923 reception percentage in the match, while Millea and senior Gabby Alberghini (Northbough, MA) led both teams with seven kills.

Mass Maritime currently sits at 3-10 while the Lancers move to 6-17 and 4-1 in the conference. Worcester State is back in action on Wednesday October 19 at 7pm when they head to Salem St for their second to last conference match of the season.
