Lancers Drop Duel with Cougars

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Lancers were trying to get back on track today from a slow start post Spring Break as they faced off against cross town rivals Clark University in a 9 inning game. While the Lancers started strong, they could not hold on as Clark came back in the bottom of the ninth for a cliniching run for the victory.

Worcester State came out swinging early in this game as in the top of the 1st inning they took a 2-0 lead off of a 2 RBI single by sophomore Anthony Iamarone (Providence, RI).  In the bottom half of the 1st inning Clark loaded the bases with 2 outs in the inning but Lancers starting pitcher senior Ben Smith (Bourne, MA) was able to get out of the inning unscathed as he got a strikeout to end the inning and leave three runners on for Clark.  In the top of the 2nd inning the bats got right back to work as sophomore Tyler Smith (Leominster, MA) hit an RBI double to left making it a 3-0 lead early.

Worcester State's pitching was dominant throughout this game and the Lancers held this 3-0 lead until the bottom of the 8th inning when Clark rallied and scored 3 runs off of a 2 RBI triple and a RBI sacrifice bunt that tied the game 3-3.

The game ended in heartbreak for the Lancers again however as with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th inning, Clark University hit a walk off single up the middle as Worcester State lost its 2nd game on a walk off in a row.

This loss makes the Lancers record now sits at 4-9 and brings Clark University to 8-6.  Worcester State is back at it again on Monday as they travel to Curry College for the next single game matchup at 3pm.
