Men's Basketball Bested by Emerson

BOSTON, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's basketball dropped its first contest of the 2019-20 season on Saturday evening, falling to Emerson College 99-69 in non-conference action at the Brown & Plofker Gymnasium.

With the loss, Worcester State drops to 1-1 overall on the season, while Emerson improves to 1-0.

The Lions shot a lights out 57.1 percent in the opening 20 minutes to take a commanding 49-28 advantage into the break. Chris Cardoso (Jamaica Plain, Mass.), Cal Howes (Maynard, Mass.), and Erik Bjorn (Holden, Mass.) all put up five first half points to lead the Lancers. Nate Martin led all players at the break with 11 points for Emerson. 

Emerson kept it up in the second half, shooting 51.4 percent to seal the 30-point win. Worcester State got 11 points off the bench from freshman Zion Hendrix (Charlotte, N.C.) to finish as his team's leading scorer, putting in 13. Cardoso (12) and Bjorn (10) also finished in double figures for the visitors. Martin finished as the game's leading scorer with 20 points.

Worcester State will be back on the court next Friday at the Williams College Tournament. The Lancers will play Williams on the first day of the tourney, with an opponent to be determined for the Saturday meeting.
