Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short Versus Blues

Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short Versus Blues

Worcester, MA- On a brisk Saturday the Worcester State Women's Basketball team traveled down route 9 to take on the Wellesley College Blue in an out-of-conference matchup as they hunted for their second win of the season.

Final: Lancers: 50  Wellesley: 59

The game was slow to get going as nearly a minute and a half came off the clock before the first basket of the game was recorded and over three minutes before the Lancers got their first point on the board off a senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, MA) free throw that saw the score sit at 2-1. Wellesley would slowly build up their lead during the first quarter going up by nine points before a first-year Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA) basket would start a slow and steady build-back for the Lancers. A late layup and free throw would push Wellelsey's lead back to nine at the end of the quarter but Worcester was steadily gaining momentum for the second quarter of action.

The second quarter would see the teams alternating baskets as Worcester worked to keep the difference in single digits. A late quarter burst by the Blue would send Wellesley up late by 17 points heading into halftime with the score settled at 33-16 in the Blues favor.

The second half would tell a different story for the Lancers as sophomore Cam Watkins (Dracut, MA) and Hurynowicz knocked back shot after shot to cut Wellesley's lead down to 10. Wellesley called a much-needed timeout to regroup and burst out of the huddle retrenched their team back to their 18-point lead. Some late third-quarter action from first-year Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) would see Worcester head into the final quarter of action with just 12 points to make up.

A first-year Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) layup would see the lead down to 10 at 39-49 to open up the Lancers offensive attack and comeback bid in the fourth quarter. Smith would follow up it with another just a minute later to bring the score to 41-49, and would then make it six unanswered as just 45 seconds later she laid in her third basket. A timeout would allow Wellesely the breathing room to form a response but the Lancers were hot on their heels throughout the final six minutes of action. Ultimately the bid would fall just short for Worcester as they dropped the matchup 59-50 to the Blue.

Watkins led the Lancers on the night with 12 points while Hurynowicz controlled the boards with 10 rebounds on the afternoon.

Worcester (1-7,0-0) returns to action on Tuesday, December 5th as they head to Springfield College for 7 pm tip-off.
