Lancers Fall in Defensive Battle at Wheaton

Worcester, MA- The Lancer's Field Hockey squad travelled out to Norton, MA Tuesday night to take on Wheaton College. Having just come off a close loss to Wellesley last week, Worcester State was looking to come out fast on Wheaton and claim a clear lead. Last season saw the Lancers squeeze past Wheaton in a 2-1 overtime battle with a quick goal by Karalyn Jones.

Wheaton was fast on the start, drawing a corner in the first two minutes of play and scoring in the first three minutes of the contest. The Lancers will head without a shot for the first two quarters of the game before opening up in the third quarter with a 16-4 shot advantage that found junior Zoe Athanasopoulos (Hopedale, MA) tie the game up at 1-a-piece.

The Lancers were unable to hold the pressure and Gabby Monfredo found Sophie Shekarchi for the game winning goal. Junior Grace Adams (Leominster, MA) led both teams with 8 shots in the game and 5 finding the frame, but was unable to sneak one past the Lyons goalkeeper to even the score. Sophomore Madison Ferrara (Somerset, MA) had nine saves on the night for the Lancers in the loss.

Worcester State, now sitting at 3-3, is back in action on Thursday night when they take on cross town rival WPI in a thriller under the lights at 7pm on Coughlin field.
