10-run fifth gives Seahawks margin of victory in 15-5 win over Bears

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sunday, March 24, 2024) - The #6/8 Salve Regina University baseball team cruised to a 15-5 win at "home" against the visiting Bears of Bridgewater State University on the artificial turf of another Bears' home facility Sunday afternoon - Brown University's Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium - in non-league action.

The Seahawks (13-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) used a 10-run fifth inning to put the game away. After taking the early 1-0 lead on a Christian Homa (Fairfield, Conn.) homer in the bottom of the first, Salve Regina trailed 3-1 when the Bears (5-6, 0-0 MASCAC) got a two-run triple from Mathew Pigeon (Canton, Mass.) in the top of the second. Cam Jones (Ipswich, Mass.) later singled in Pigeon for the Bears.

Homa had four RBI on the day from four different at bats. The Seahawks scored 10 runs in the fifth on four hits including three bases-loaded walks and a hit-by-pitch with the sacks full. Starter Sean Mulligan (Verona, N.J.) went five innings and improved to 4-0 on the season.

All-Time Series: Salve Regina won the first-ever meeting in 1984 (4-1) in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. The Seahawks ended a Bears' seven-game win streak in the series when they finished on top, 11-4, in the last meeting in Newport in 2015. Salve Regina has its first-ever win streak (two games) in the series and has a 4-8 mark all-time against Bridgewater State.

Evan O'Rourke's RBI single through the right side plated Shea Donovan. Three straight Seahawks walked with the bases loaded - Christian Homa, Tyler Cannoe, and Wil McCarthy. Petrosino singled up the middle for an 11-3 lead when Homa came home. Donovan hit by pitch with bases loaded scored Cannoe. Petrosino and McCarthy scored when Breen reached on a fielder's choice. NOTEWORTHY

  • Christian Homa collected four RBI, one each in four different at bats.
  • Joe DeRienzo pitched in relief in both wins on the week and retired all nine batters faced in the three innings of work with five strikeouts, two fly outs, and two ground outs.
  • Wil McCarthy had a five-hit week as well with four runs scored and four driven in.
  • Seahawks win their 12th straight and score double-digit runs for the fifth time this season.
