Colonels Swept in Tri-Match Hosted by Fitchburg State University

FITCHBURG, Mass. - The Curry College Women's Volleyball team was swept in a tri-match with Nichols College and Fitchburg State University Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels fell to the Bison of Nichols College 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-16) in the opening match and dropped the second match to Fitchburg State 3-2 (25-13, 25-17, 10-25, 24-26, 15-10).

With the losses, Curry moves forward with a record of 2-2.

In the opening set of the first match, Nichols took an early lead thanks to a 16-8 run to start. 

The Colones immediately responded with a 7-4 run with kills recorded by Haley Ferrara (Sandown, N.H.) and Jess Sullivan (Burns, Wyo.). Curry was held back by the Bison despite a cluster of late set kills from Ferrara and senior Brooke Reissfelder (Biddeford, Maine). The Bison would take the first set, 25-20.

In the second set, Curry took a quick 10-4 lead over the Bison; Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) marked three kills in the scoring run. Nichols College lessened the deficit, bringing the score to 13-13 following a series of kills by Sydney Ball and errors on the Colonels' end. Curry again brought the set within grasp following multiple Bison errors. Multiple service aces and errors late in the set granted the Bison the second set victory. 

The third set saw a dominant Bison side, outpacing the Colonels 25-16 with multiple service aces late in the set to take the match victory in Fitchburg, Mass.

Guzman led her side in kills (10) and total attacks (39) in the loss.

In Curry's second contest of the afternoon, the Colonels were downed by the Falcons of Fitchburg State University 3-1 (25-13, 25-17, 10-25, 24-26, 15-10). 

The Colonels kept pace with the Falcons until a flurry of service aces and kills pushed Fitchburg State to a 15-7 run to close the first set. 

The Falcons took a quick lead in the second set but the Colonels would fight back to tie at 9-9 after two Lauren Guzman service aces and Falcons' errors. Fitchburg State would then charge forward on an 11-5 run to solidify their lead. A Samantha Mirra kill would seal the second set for the hosting Falcons. 

The Colonels dominated the Falcons in the third set, claiming the set 25-10. Numerous kills from Haley Ferrara, Leah Oscar-Pheonix (Westwood, Mass.), and Lauren Guzman

The fourth set saw the Colonels tie up the match at two sets a piece. A 26-24 nail-biter fell in favor of Curry College. 

The fifth set of the second match of the afternoon ended in favor of the hosting Falcons (15-10). 

Curry College was led by Lauren Guzman who marked 17 kills and 19 digs. Curry's Avia Fraine (Mattapoisett, Mass.) marked 20 digs in the loss to the Falcons. 

The Colonels will be back on the hardwood Tuesday as they hit the road to face Regis College at 7 PM.
