Falcons Soar Past Lancers In MASCAC Victory

Worcester Mass. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team defeated the Lancers of Worcester State University, 5-1 this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Worcester Ice Center.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 8:37 mark of the second frame when senior Rece Bergeman (Newark, Del.) settled a feed from freshman Nolan Sargent (Littleton, Colo.) and found the back of the net for his team-leading seventh tally on the season for the 1-0 edge.

The Falcons doubled their advantage (2-0) two minutes later as sophomore Corey Tumenas (Leominster, Mass.) buried a shot inside the far post off an assist from newcomer Jeremy Maillet (Leominster, Mass.) for his second goal of the year.

The Green and Gold upped the lead to 3-0 at the 18:36 mark with senior Hunter Fortin (Westerville, Ohio) deposited a shot into the back of the net for his fifth tally of the 2022-23 campaign with assists from classmates Anthony Ceolin (Simsbury, Conn.) and Gene Bouthiette (Enfield, Conn.).

In the third period of play, Worcester State cut the deficit to 3-1 midway through the stanza when senior Brendan Ronan (Saugus, Mass.) struck for his team-best fourth score of the season. Fitchburg State answered back at the 14:52 mark as Fortin potted his second tally of the contest (4-1) before the Falcons secured the victory with just under three minutes remaining in the contest with graduate student Antoine Gignac (Quebec City, Que.) notching an empty netter for his second goal of the year, resulting in the 5-1 final.
