Lord Leads Westfield in Consolation

CONSOLATION FINAL

Westfield State's Vawn Lord scored 18 points to lead four players in double figures in scoring, as the Owls topped Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 78-52 in the consolation final of the Rick Martin – Hampton Inn Tournament at the Woodward Center on Saturday afternoon.

Westfield bolted to a 45-21 halftime lead and never looked back.

Jauch Green Jr. added 15 points and eight rebounds, and Joseph Meade and Marcus Collins each added 11 for the Owls.  Westfield shot 49 percent from the floor and 17-21 at the foul line.

Mason Memmelaar was the lone engineer in double figures with 18 points and added five rebounds.  Westfield held RPI (0-2) to just 35 percent shooting from the floor.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Rutgers-Newark got 15 points from Quincy Rutherford, and tournament MVP Mike Vick added a balanced all-court game with five assists and six rebounds to lead the Scarlet Raiders to a 57-51 win over Utica College in the championship game of the Rick Martin – Hampton Inn Tournament hosted by Westfield State University at the Woodward Center in Westfield Mass on Saturday afternoon.

Rutgers (1-1) got out to a 34-24 halftime lead, and held on down the stretch for the win.

Chase Barneys added 11 points and five rebounds, and BJ Honis added 10 points and six boards for the winners.

Utica (1-1) was led by 14 points and five rebounds from Kimderick Murphy, and 10 points and six rebounds from Darius Hopkins.   The Pioneers shot just 28 percent from the floor in the first half, and just 5-21 from three-point range in the game.
