
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Bridgewater State College received goals from six different players as the Bears posted a 6-1 victory against host Johnson & Wales University in a men's soccer contest at Pierce Field on Thursday afternoon.
Senior forward Luke Brewer (Edgartown, MA) gave the visiting Bears a 1-0 lead just 1:51 into the contest as he slipped a shot past the JWU netminder off a scramble in front of the net. Bridgewater State took a 2-0 advantage on a goal by freshman Tucker Fairbanks (Plympton, MA) in the 17th minute. Sophomore forward Chris Swindell (Milford, MA) and senior midfielder Matt Daniels (South Easton, MA) closed out the first half scoring for the Bears who led 4-0 at the intermission.
Johnson & Wales would get on the board early in the second half when freshman Josh Strom (Franklin, MA) scored the first goal of his collegiate career to cut the deficit to 4-1 at the 46:18 mark.
Bridgewater State tallied a pair of goals late in the game to
put the finishing touches on the 6-1 victory. Sophomore
midfielder Jose DePina (Boston, MA) potted his
first goal of the season and freshman forward Simao
Mendes (Brockton, MA) converted a penalty kick
to round out the scoring.
Senior Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, MA) had two saves in
the win for Bridgewater State, while junior Joe
Ferraro (Freehold, NJ) made three stops in the loss for
the JWU.
With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 2-8 on the season while
Bridgewater State improves to 6-4-1.
