Field Hockey Falls to Western Connecticut, 5-1

DANBURY, Conn. -- The Western Connectut State University field hockey team scored the first five goals of the game as the Colonials posted a 5-2 Little East Conference victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Colonials improved to 14-3 on the season and 10-1 in the Little East, while the Bears fall to 2-13 overall and 2-9 in conference play.

Senior forward Carly Matasavage (Middlebury, Conn) netted a pair of goals and classmate Morgan Matthews (Bethel, CT) added a goal and two assists to lead the way for WestConn. Junior forward Olivia Ahlman (Halifax, Mass.) found the back of the net twice to pace visiting Bridgewater State.

The hosts outshot the visitors by a 29-9 margin while also holding the edge in penalty corners, 8-4.

The Colonials jumped on top right away and would not look back. Junior forward Kimberly Brower (Mahopac, N.Y.) ripped a low shot into the back corner of the cage off a feed from Matthews less than one minute into the contest.

Less than two minutes later, Matasavage potted her first of the afternoon off an assit from Matthews before Matthews earned her team-leading 15th goal of the season, extending the lead to 3-0 early in the second stanza. Matasavage notched her 11th of the year, unassisted, 5:14 into the second quarter, and sophomore Mia Schumey (West Hartford, Conn.) netted her first of the season with 1:01 remaining in the period to give the  Colonials a 5-0 lead at the break.

The Bears would cut into the deficit in the second half. Ahlman buried a pair of scoring strikes in the third quarter, giving her a team-leading five goals on the season.

Western Connecticut junior goalkeeper Neve Manion (Newington, Conn.) stopped all five shots she faced to record her 13th win of the 2019 campaign. Classmate Samantha Ripegno (Stamford, Conn.) relieved her for a quarter and recorded one save. Manion reentered the game for the final period after the Bears had rallied with Ahlman's two goals in the third.

Bridgewater senior Jillian Delaney (Foxborough, Mass.) and rookie Deirdre Duarte (Fall River, Mass.) split time in net for the Bears, combining for 11 saves.

The Bears return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they host Wheaton College at 3:30, while the Colonials off until next Saturday when they entertain Worcester State University at 11:00 AM.
