Women's Lacrosse Falls to Worcester State in Season Finale, 18-10

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team wrapped up the 2021 season with an 18-10 setback to host Worcester State University on Thursday night at Coughlin Field. The game marked the season finale for both teams.

The visiting Bears fall to 4-6 on the year, while the Lancers end the 2021 campaign with a record of 6-3. After going 0 for their first 22 in the all-time series against the Bears, the Lancers have won each of the last three meetings with all three wins coming this season.

Sophomore midfielder Lily Gendron (Lakeville, Mass.) scored a game-high seven goals and dished out two assists to pace Worcester State. Gendron also added a game-best seven draw controls to go along with a pair of ground balls.

Sophomore attack Shea Jarvis (Auburn, Mass.) checked in with three goals and an assist for the Lancers while senior attack Abby Magnuson (Ellington, Conn.) notched a goal and a game-high four helpers, and senior midfielder Kyle Hill (Lunenburg, Mass.) tallied a goal, three assists four draw controls and two ground balls.

Senior midfielder Kelsi Brennan (Dedham, Mass.) filled the stat sheet for Bridgewater State with three goals, a game-high six ground balls and four caused turnovers as well as three draw controls. Brennan moved into fourth place on the Bears' all-time caused turnover list with 87 as she surpassed Adrienne Berkland (83 CT, 2005-2008), Haley Riley (85 CT, 2015-2018) and Lisa Moynihan (86 CT, 2016-2019). 

Sophomore attack Katherine Tracy (Marion, Mass.) also scored three goals for the Bears, while senior midfielder Emily Hiller (Marion, Mass.) recorded two goals, two assists, five ground balls, five draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. Freshman attack Savannah Herrington (Kinnelon, N.J.) added two goals for the visitors.

Worcester scored the first three goals of the contest, including a pair by Gendron, and never trailed in the game. The Lancers led 10-6 at the break and reeled of three straight tallies to open the second half to extend the lead to seven (13-6) with 24:11 left to play. The Bears would get not closer than four goals the rest of the way. Back-to-back strikes by Tracy and Hiller closed the gap to 14-10 with 9:12 remaining, but the Lancers closed out the game with a 4-0 run highlighted by two goals from Gendron.

The Lancers held the advantage in both shots (30-26) and draw controls (18-12), while the Bears held a 26-24 edge in ground balls. Bridgewater went 6-for-10 on free position attempts, while Worcester converted 2 of 4.

Lancer senior goalkeeper Chloe O'Brien (Sturbridge, Mass.) turned aside seven shots in a little over 45 minutes of work (45:11) to record her sixth win of the season.

Sophomore Olivia Kerrigan (Braintree, Mass.) and freshman Laura Giovaniello (Walpole, Mass.) combined to make four saves between the pipes for the Bears.

Notes: Hiller wrapped up her career at Bridgewater State with 103 goals and 54 assists for 157 points in 51 career games. She also finished with 92 ground balls, 113 draw controls and 58 caused turnovers….Brennan notched 19 goals, nine assists, 117 ground balls, 61 draw controls and 87 caused turnovers in 50 career contests.
