Field Hockey Falls to Ohio Wesleyan in Season Opener, Faces Nichols at Noon Saturday
Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey got off to a fast start, scoring three goals in the first quarter as a the Battling Bishops posted a 7-1 win over Westfield State in the 2024 season opener at the Caryl Newhof Classic at Smith College in Northampton on Friday afternoon.

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey got off to a fast start, scoring three goals in the first quarter as a the Battling Bishops posted a 7-1 win over Westfield State in the 2024 season opener at the Caryl Newhof Classic at Smith College in Northampton on Friday afternoon.
The Owls (0-1) will face Nichols College in the consolation game tomorrow at 12 noon at Smith. The host Pioneers topped the Bison, 6-0 in the other opening round game today.
Olivia Danley got the scoring started for the Bishops 5:49 into the contest, deflecting a feed on a penalty corner into the upper right corner of the net. Danley tallied a pair of goals to lead OWU (1-0) on the afternoon.
Westfield got on the scoreboard with Annalise Lopes' (Plymouth, Mass./North) first goal as an Owl with 2:01 left in the contest.
OWU, which finished with a 17-1 record a year ago, outshot the Owls 28-1 on the afternoon. Emma Gniadek made 18 saves for the Owls.
