Falcons Sail Past Vikings in MASCAC Action

Fitchburg, Mass.  – The Fitchburg State men's ice hockey team posted a 3-1 win over the Vikings of Salem State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Wallace Civic Center

The Basics

Score: Fitchburg State 3, Salem State 1
Records: Fitchburg State (6-5-2, 4-2-2 MASCAC) | Salem State (3-10-0, 1-7 MASCAC)

How It Happened

After a scoreless first period, the Falcons took the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Samuel Rennick (Salisbury, Mass.) found a streaking Jeremy Maillet (Leominster, Mass.) for the first goal of the game. The score was Maillet's first collegiate tally.

Senior Christopher Mattone (New Windsor, NY) made several key saves to open the third period for Fitchburg State. However, the Vikings tied the match with a goal from newcomer Zach Dill (Lake Tahoe, Calif.). Junior Erik Larsson (Lake Tahoe, Calif.) had the helper on the score.

After the Falcons could not take advantage of the power-play opportunity, the Green and Gold forged ahead with a goal from Cole Archambeault (Leominster, Mass.). The junior with the nifty goal tucked past Vikings' goaltender Aaron Mercer (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) for the 2-1 lead at the 13:31 mark of the final frame.

Senior Wyatt Wilmshurst (Massena, NY) notched an insurance goal two minutes later. The senior added a power-play goal with assists from Hunter Fortin (Westerville, Ohio) and Toivo Kramer (New York, NY).
