Football Falls to Buccaneers

BUZZARDS BAY, MA: Fitchburg State Football fell to Mass Maritime Academy in conference action this afternoon by a score of 21-3.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 9/23/23

- Score: Mass Maritime 21, Fitchburg 3

- Records: Mass Maritime (1-2, 1-0 MASCAC), Fitchburg (0-4, 0-2 MASCAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The Falcons got on the board first with 13 minutes left in the first quarter on a 30-yard field goal by Jonah Costa (E. Providence, RI). Fitchburg's defense would hold the Bucs scoreless through the first and most of the second quarter before they were able to break the goal line.

- Maritime's 14-play 84-yard drive was capped off with a Chase Dombroski three-yard touchdown run. After a blocked PAT by the Falcons, the Buccaneers would have just a three-point lead at 6-3. Before the half, with 4:40 seconds left, Maritime would plunge another into the endzone on a Marc Murphy hurdle from five yards out. Charlie Naylor would convert the two-point conversion to put the score at 14-3.

- After the break, the Bucs would score the only points of the second half with 5:37 left in the third quarter. Saverio Relle would get the team's third rushing TD of the contest from three yards out. After a good PAT, the score is set at the final of 21-3.
