Buzzards Bay, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University softball team swept the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime 2-0, 11-7 in a non-conference double header at Alison Rollins Field.

Game 1:

Behind strong pitching from senior Taylor Colvin (Lancaster, Mass.) the Falcons took game one 2-0 over the Bucs. Colvin faced just 24 batters to earn the complete game shutout, scattering four hits with 9 strikeouts over seven innings.

After two scoreless innings the Falcons got the only run they would need in the bottom of the 3rd inning. First year Lauren Kirkconnell (Dayville, Conn.) singled to center field to open the frame, moved to third on a fielder's choice and a wild pitch then crossed the plate on a RBI from sophomore Molly Grass (Rockland, Mass.).

Julianna Savone (Palm Coast, Fla) drilled an RBI triple to right centerfield scoring Dana Cisowski (Torrington, Conn.) for an insurance run in the fifth inning for the Green and Gold.

Mass. Maritime threatened in the top of the seventh. With one out senior Madison Coughlin (Monroe, Conn.) was hit by a pitch and junior Malarie Pittsley (Dighton, Mass.) singled to centerfield to put runners on second and third with two outs. Colvin settled down and induced a pop-up to end the rally and the game.

  • Emma Ruginski (Plymouth, Mass.) had two hits for the Bucs

Knotted at 4-4, the Bucs forged ahead 6-4 capped by a RBI triple from Olivia Camelo (Carver, Mass.) who would score on a wild pitch.

Following a home run from Grass in the fourth, Fitchburg State would capitalize on a pair of Bucs miscues to break the game open in the bottom of the fifth for an 8-6 lead.

Mass. Maritime would add a run in the top of the sixth on a defensive throwing error from the Falcons, however the home team would add three insurance runs in the bottom of the frame for the 11-6 final. Colvin pitching in relief, delivered a 2 RBI single for the big hit of the inning.
