Lancers Fall in Comeback Bid to Lyons

Lancers Fall in Comeback Bid to Lyons

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Field Hockey team (0-1,0-0) returned to action Tuesday night for their first regular season away game of the season, when they took on the Wheaton Lyons. Last season Worcester State edged out the 2-1 victory over the Lyons and scored they would look to expand upon under the lights.

Final:

Worcester State:0

Wheaton:1

How it Happened:

Both teams would look to get the action started early with junior Leah McNally (Worcester, MA) opening the offensive attack for Worcester just a minute into the game. The action would continue its back and forth pace as the midfield controlled a majority of the action. Wheaton would secure the first penalty corner of the game, but the Lancer defense would force the shot wide and continue the stalemate. The second quarter followed more of the same as each team worked the ball around the pitch looking to find the needed space to crack into the attacking zone for a scoring opportunity.

While the third quarter was primed to continue the stalemate, it would take just 57 seconds into the second half for Wheaton to send across the lone goal of the game. Worcester would look to answer a minute later but a quick save from the Lyons would keep them off the scoreboard. The final quarter of action would raise the intensity as time quickly trickled away for Worcester and a run of penalty corners in the final two minutes gave the Lancers a chance to tie up the game and force overtime, but a final shot wide would put the ball and the game out of reach for Worcester.

Senior Madison Ferrara (Somerset, MA) would end the game with seven saves while McNally would have three solid attempts on the cage cleared away by the Lyons.

What's Next:

The Blue and Gold (0-2, 0-0) will return to action on Saturday at home when they host the Keene State Owls at 12pm.
