Women's Hoops Soars Past Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's basketball team ran its winning streak to three on Saturday afternoon, defeating Fitchburg State University 66-46 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Parkinson Gymnasium. 

With the win, Worcester State improves to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in the MASCAC, while Fitchburg State drops to 4-13 and 2-3 in league play.

The Lancers got off to a hot start in the first quarter, outscoring the Falcons 21-13 while shooting 57 percent from the field. Senior Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) led all players with six points for the visitors, while Emma Thomson added five points for the hosts. 

Worcester State continued to pull away in the second quarter to take a 38-23 edge into the dressing room. Fitchburg State's Angelina Marazzi scored seven of her team's 10 points in the period, while Worcester State got six points off the bench from junior Gigi LeMay (Grafton, Mass.).

The Falcons narrowly edged Worcester State by a margin of 15-13 in the third quarter, but couldn't carry any momentum to the fourth, as the Lancers held the hosts to just eight points in the final 10 minutes to seal the victory. Sophomore Sarah Blomgren (Lunenburg, Mass.) added eight points in the second half to lead the Lancers.

LeMay scored a game-high 17 points off the bench to lead her team to the victory, and was one of four Lancers in double figures. Blomgren and Sweeney each scored 12 points, while junior guard Colleen Cutting (Auburn, Mass.) matched a season-high with 10 points. 

Marazzi was the leading Falcon with 16 points in the defeat. Former Lancer Sam Maglione scored four points with two steals and two rebounds for the Falcons in her first game against her old club.

Worcester State will return to the hardwood to host Bridgewater State University on Wednesday night. Fitchburg State will be back in action the same evening, traveling to Framingham State.
