Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Emmanuel, 13-10

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University lacrosse team continued its winning ways on Saturday afternoon, defeating Emmanuel College, 13-10.

Senior Camryn Gonsalves (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scored six goals and added three assists as the Bears raised their record to 8-1 with a fourth consecutive victory and equaled their entire season win total from a year ago.

Gonsalves now has 38 goals and 17 assists for 55 points through the first nine games of the season. Entering Saturday, Gonsalves was tied for tenth in all of Division III in points and tied for 16th in goals.

Senior Erin McIntyre (Tewksbury, Mass.) and graduate student Savannah Herrington (Kinnelon, N.J.) scored three goals each for BSU in the win at Roberto Clemente Field.

Coach Erica Adams is now 90-63 in her career, leaving her one shy of tying the BSU record for lacrosse coaching wins.

Erika Smith went 91-35 during her seven-year coaching stint with the Bears.

BSU jumped to a 6-2 lead after one period with Gonsalves scoring three times and led, 9-4, at halftime.

The Saints moved within 12-7 going into the final period and cut the deficit to two goals before Herrington added the game's final goal with 3:43 left.

In addition to the three goals from Gonsalves, McIntyre, Herrington and junior Ashley Silva (Rowley, Mass.) scored for BSU in the opening quarter.

The Bears scored four straight goals after it was 2-2.

A Gonsalves' goal with 4:01 left in the half put BSU in front, 9-3 and she scored again with 8:42 remaining in the third period for an 11-5 lead.

After Emmanuel got as close as 11-7, Gonsalves scored with four seconds to go in the period for the 12-7 lead.

The Saints scored the first three goals of the final period in a span of less than six minutes to make it 12-10, but Herrington added a goal for BSU with less than four minutes to play to help secure the victory.

Freshman Sara Skaff (Lowell, Mass.) made eight saves for BSU to improve to 7-1.

Senior Abby Brown (Saco, Maine) had three goals and three assists for Emmanuel while junior Madeline Wright (Mattapoisett, Mass.) had three goals and an assist.

The Bears held a 30-24 shot advantage for the game as well as an 18-8 edge in draw controls. McIntyre led all players with a season-high nine draw controls as she now has 253 in her career.

The Bears are off until next Saturday when they open the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference season by playing atw Worcester State.

Emmanuel plays at Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday.
