Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Field Hockey team (0-3, 0-0) returns to action after a four day break, this time heading west to Springfield College. The Lancers are on the hunt for their first goal and win this season as they look to avenge their 1-0 loss from last season in what was just their second game of the season.
Final
Worcester State: 3
Springfield: 2
How it Happened:
The opening quarter of action saw a build up of offensive pressure against the Lancers as the Pride grabbed the opening and closing corners of the quarter sprinkled with shot attempts into the opening 15 minutes. Senior Madison Ferrara (Somerset, MA) and the Lancer defensive unit were unbreakable though, holding off any Springfield scoring attempt. The Lancers would begin to take charge in the second quarter with a shot attempt by junior Maggie Nailor (Dartmouth, MA) was saved by Springfield's goalie, but the subsequent clear would result in the first corner for Worcester State. Two further shots and two further penalty corners would be called in the Lancers favor before first year Kylie Casey (Hubbardston, MA) would open up scoring for Worcester with a stroke just over 19 minutes into the game. The opening goal would be quickly followed up by a second as first year Kate Harrison (Chelmsford, MA) would record her first goal of the Lancers season off an assist from junior Charlotte MacGregor (Bellingham, MA) to take the 2-0 lead. The Pride would immediately respond in what is normally the most dangerous time after a goal with a shot and corner attempt of their own but failed to convert to tie it up.
The Lancers would carry the 2-0 lead into the halftime break as Ferrara would record four saves in the half.
The second half would see the Lancers continue on the offensive attack grabbing the first corner and shot, but Springfield would not sit by peacefully as just under eight minutes into the third quarter they would claim back one goal. Capitalizing on their building momentum, the Pride would quickly tie up the game just three minutes later off a rebounded save to tie the game up. The remainder of the third would see the Pride look for goal number three, which would not come until just under two minutes into the fourth quarter on a quick counter off a broken up corner attempt by the Lancers. Worcester would attempt to send the game to overtime as Harrison looked for goal number two on the game, but Springfield held on to their lead to grab the 3-2 win.
Ferrara would close out the night with 12 saves while Harrison would lead the team with two shots on goal in the loss.
