Falcons Topped By Bears In Conference Action

Bridgewater, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University Women's Basketball team dropped a 90-32 decision to the Bears of Bridgewater State this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Tinsley Center.

 The Basic

How It Happened

1st quarter

Bridgewater State opened the contest with a 5-0 edge on a jumper from senior Emma Fenton (Monument Beach, Mass.) and a three-pointer by sophomore Kylie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) before the Falcons answered with back-to-back three balls from junior Olivia Almeida (Wilmington, Mass.) to trim the deficit to 13-6.

The Bears upped the advantage to 24-10 on buckets by sophomore Arielle Cleveland (Groveland, Mass.) and senior Kylee Piche (Bridgewater, Mass.), but the Falcons answered back as sophomore Morgan Genness (Belgrade, Maine) drained a three-pointer to make the score 24-13.

2nd quarter

The host pushed the lead to 30-17 on buckets by junior Caroline Tripp (Plymouth, Mass.), senior Sophia Gaucher (Lakeville, Mass.) and Piche, but the Green and Gold responded with a Stephanie Hart (Shirley, Mass.) basket (30-15).

Bridgewater State extended the margin to 44-15 on a Jordan Peebles (Middleboro, Mass.) before Fitchburg State reduced the lead to 46-18 as sophomore Allison Prentis (Mansfield, Mass.) knocked down a three-ball.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Bridgewater State upped the lead to 54-18 on a Piche basket before Fitchburg State got a bucket from sophomore Delaney Brown (Billerica, Mass.) to reduce the deficit to 56-20.

The Green and Gold continued to battle as sophomore Caileen Hurley (Hanson, Mass.) and Genness buried three balls (69-26), but Peebles registered a layup for the Bears to make the score 71-26.

4th quarter

The Bears extended the advantage to 75-28 on a pair of free-throws from Cleveland before Hurley registered a layup for the Falcons (77-32). Bridgewater State secured the victory with junior Kayla Thomas (North Falmouth, Mass.) notching a layup, resulting in the 90-32 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were led by Almeida with a team-best nine points and three rebounds
  • Genness added seven points, two caroms, one assist and two steals
  • For the Bears, Piche finished with a game-leading 17 points, four boards and six assists
  • Tripp chipped in with 15 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals
  • This evening's contest marked the 74th meeting between the Falcons and the Bears             on the hardwood with Fitchburg State 15-59 all-time when taking on \Bridgewater State
