WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State's Ryan Viana (Framingham, Mass.) scored with 15:53 left in the game to force a 1-1 draw with Regis College in a non-conference men's soccer match at Alumni Field late Saturday afternoon.
Viana half-volleyed a looping ball, served into the penalty area by Carter Hebert (Easthampton, Mass.), into the back of the net for the game tying goal. Hebert was about 30 yards out on the left side, and Viana won a footrace to the ball with a Pride defender.
Offense was tough to come by on an afternoon that saw sun, clouds, some rain, and swirling winds that gusted to 20 mph.
Derrick Camara (Berkley, Mass./Somerset Berkley) scored in the 39th minute to give Regis a 1-0 lead that they took into the halftime. Westfield State goaltender Sean Newmark (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph's), making his first career start, saved an initial blast from his left side, but the ball rebounded out to Nolan McMahon (White River Jct., Vt./Hartford) about 8 yards out to Newmark's right. As Newmark recovered from the initial save, McMahon slotted a nice diagonal pass through traffic back to Camara at the right post for the goal.
Newmark made eight saves on the day, including a point-blank stop on the first shot he faced, and several more big saves in the second half, including tipping another blast from close range over the crossbar as he withstood a series of three straight corner kicks from the Pride late in regulation.
Regis split the game in goal between Kyle Weidermann (Piscataway, N.J.), who made one save in the first half, and Caleb Russo (Brookfield, N.H./Kingswood), who stopped four shots in the second half but allowed the game-tying goal.
Total shots were nearly even with Westfield ahead 15-14, but Regis put 10 shots on frame to the Owls six. Westfield held a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The game started nearly an hour after it's slated 4:00 p.m. kickoff due to a transportation delay for the Pride.
Westfield is now 5-5-4 this season, while Regis is 4-7-3. Westfield will be back in MASCAC conference action on Friday, traveling to Fitchburg State for a 4:00 p.m. start.
