Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Wellesley, 15-8

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team posted a 15-8 victory over Wellesley College on Wednesday evening at Butler Stadium.

The Bears improve to 4-5 on the season with their second straight win, while the Blue fall to 2-4 with their third straight setback.

Junior attack Savannah Herrington (Kinnelon, N.J.) and senior midfielder Delaney Langton (Scituate, R.I.) each recorded three goals and an assist to lead the way for Bridgewater State. The Bears also received three goals from senior midfielder Katie O'Brien (Pembroke, Mass.), two goals and an assist from sophomore attack Camryn Gonsalves (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and a pair of goals from sophomore midfielder Erin McIntyre (Tewksbury, Mass.).

The game was knotted at 2-2 following a goal by Wellesley freshman attack Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) with 11:47 remaining in the first quarter. Bridgewater State then dominated the rest of the first half reeling off ten unanswered goals to take a 12-2 lead into the break. Six different Bears found the back of the net during the 10-0 run including three goals from Herrington and two apiece by O'Brien and McIntyre.

Trailing 14-4 in the fourth quarter, the Blue used a four-goal outburst capped off by a pair of markers by Tipton to cut the deficit to 14-8 with just under four minutes left to play. That, however, would be as close as Wellesley would get. BSU junior midfielder Haley Wood (Middleboro, Mass.) converted off a pass from Gonsalves to close out the scoring as the Bears came away with the 15-8 win.

Tipton led all players with five goals to lead the way for the Blue.

Bridgewater State held a 31-19 shot advantage for the game as well as an 18-9 edge in draw controls. The Bears converted 5 of 9 free position attempts while the Blue went 0-for-3.

McIntyre recorded a game-high nine draw controls.

Junior goalkeeper Laura Giovaniello (Walpole, Mass.) and senior netminder Olivia Kerrigan (Braintree, Mass.) split the game between the pipes for Bridgewater State with Giovaniello picking up her third win of the season. Giovaniello made one save while Kerrigan turned aside three shots. Three keepers combined to make 12 saves for Wellesley.

The Bears are off until Saturday, April 1st (noon) when they open Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) play on the road against Worcester State University. The Blue travel to Wheaton College on Saturday (Mar. 25) afternoon for a one o'clock New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest with the Lyons.
