WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State softball dropped a non-conference doubleheader to local rival Western New England, falling 5-4 in a walk off in game one, and 6-2 in game two.
The Owls fell behind 4-0 in the third inning, the big blow a 2-run double from Riley Kane.
Westfield came all the way back to tie the game, getting a 2-run homer from Sarah Bingham in the fourth, and RBI single from Sarah Hough in the fifth, and a solo home run from Hannah Wodecki in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4.
Bingham's home run was the 15th of her career, tying her for second on the Owls' all-time list.
WNE manufactured the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Angelees Carrasqui led off with single to left, the Bears bunted her over to second, and a pair of infield singles pushed her across the plate with the game-winning run.
Angelina Vartuli (L, 1-3) took the loss in relief of Joss Mettey. Hannah Wodecki and Mia Alfonso each had a pair of hits for the Owls.
Ava Blanchard (W, 6-2) got the win in relief for the Golden Bears, working three innings and striking out six.
In the nightcap, Westfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Mia Alfonso's solo home run in the top of the second inning, but the Golden Bears answered with a solo shot from Kim Baumann to tie the game 1-1.
The Golden Bears struck for four runs in the bottom of the third inning, getting a 2-run homer from Riley Cane and a solo shot from Alex Ferrioulo. Kane (W, 6-6) earned the win in relief, working five innings while allowing just one run.
Westfield's Katherine Canty (L, 8-1) took the loss in relief, her first of the season after starting 8-0. Alfonso finished 2-4 with two RBI for the Owls.
Westfield State is now 18-6 on the season. The Owls will next play at Salem State on Sunday, with the doubleheader pushed back a day with heavy rain in the forecast for Saturday.
Western New England improved to 11-8 on the season.
