Falcons Split a Pair with Mass. Maritime

Cordeau collects four hits on the day

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – The Fitchburg State baseball team split a pair of non-conference games with the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime on Sunday afternoon at Hendy Field.

Game 1:  Fitchburg State 8, Mass. Maritime 1
Game 2:  Fitchburg State 1, Mass. Maritime 6
Records: Fitchburg State (2-7), Mass. Maritime (1-5)

How it Happened – Game 1

Fitchburg jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first before the Buccaneers had a chance to swing the bats. Zachary May (Rochdale, Mass.) with the big RBI double in the inning.

Up 3-0, senior Richard Sharp (Townsend, Mass.) had a RBI single to score Jackson Vail (Grafton, Mass.) to extend the Falcons lead to 4-0.

The Buccaneers got on the board in the bottom of the third on an infield single by Pain, scoring Pietrafesa. However the Falcons countered with a towering home rum from Nicholas Cordeau (Melrose, Mass.).

The Falcons went on to score four more runs in the fourth bringing the score to 8-1.

By the Numbers – Game 1

  • Maritime senior Ben Paine (Dartmouth, Mass) went 2-for-3 in game one with an RBI. 
  • Cameron Donahue (Methuen, Mass.) and Johan Asencio (Clinton, Mass.) had multi-hit games for the guests. Both of Donahue's hits were of the extra base variety, a double and a triple.
  • Sophomore Taryn Laramie (Franklin, NH) earned the win in three innings of relief, allowing one hit with 5 k's

How it Happened – Game 2

John Teehan pitched his best game of 2021 as he mowed down nine Fitchburg hitters en route to a complete game victory on senior day. He threw 88 pitches in the game, 62 for strikes.

Fitchburg scored their only run of the game on an RBI groundout by Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.) in the top of the first inning.

From there, the Buccaneers followed Teehan's lead at the plate and scored one run in each of the first three innings, including the solo home run from Velzis in the second.

Up 3-1 after four and a half innings, the Bucs tacked on two more runs in the fifth on the Velzis double, scoring Sullo and Killens.

Maritime added the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a Schlapak single, scoring Tropea.

By the Numbers – Game 2 

  •  Nick Cordeau strung together all three hits in the game for the Falcons, two singles and a double along with a stolen base.
  • Freshman Brett Velzis (Cypress, Tx) continued his impressive rookie campaign with the Bucs with a double and a home run with three RBI and a run scored.
  • Alex Schlapak (Dover, N.H.), and Braden Killens (Marshfield, Mass) had the other two hits for the hosts
