Falcons Soar Past Corsairs In MASCAC Action

New Bedford, Mass. The Fitchburg State ice hockey team defeated the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth, 4-1 this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Hetland Arena.

How It Happened

UMass Dartmouth threatened midway through the opening frame as senior Clay Ellerbrock (Tega Cay (S.C.), junior Colin Cromie (Elgin, Ill.) and senior Ryan Macali (Franklin, Tenn.) put a trio of shots on target, but Fitchburg State goaltender Max Macchioni (North Kingstown, R.I.) stopped all three shots to keep the contest scoreless after 20 minutes of play.

In the middle stanza, Fitchburg State broke the 0-0 stalemate at the 9:38 mark when sophomore Corey Tumenas (Leominster, Mass.) collected a rebound shot off the stick of classmate Samuel Rennick (Salisbury, Mass.) and into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season for the 1-0 edge.

The Falcons quickly doubled the advantage (2-0) as sophomore Michael Macchioni (North Kingstown, R.I) received a feed from seniors Rece Bergeman (Newark, Del.) and Gene Bouthiette (Enfield, Conn.) and deposited a shot inside the far post for his fourth goal on the year.

The Green and Gold struck again two and minutes later with sophomore Oliver Cookson (Sheffield, Mass.) settled a loose puck in front of the net and wristed a shot into the left of the net for his third taly of the 2022-23 campaign as classmate Toivo Kramer (New York, N.Y.) and junior Cole Archambeault (Leominster, Mass.) assisted on the play to make the score 3-0.

In the third period of play, UMass Dartmouth cut the deficit to 3-1 at the 9:20 mark with freshman Tyler Stewart (Pittsburgh, Penn.) finding the back of the net for his tenth score on the season, but Fitchburg State secured the victory as Bouthiette struck for his fourth marker of the year off an assist by Bergeman with just under seven minutes remaining in the contest, resulting in the 4-1 final.
