Field Hockey Victorious on Senior Day

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University field hockey team picked up a 5-0 Senior Day win over Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday morning in Little East Conference action at Coughlin Field.

With the win, the Lancers improve to 13-3 overall on the season and 9-0 in the Little East. Eastern Connecticut drops to 4-10 and 3-6 in conference play. 

Prior to the game, Worcester State honored seniors Olivia Antonelli (Westford, Mass.), Sarah Bjorn (Holden, Mass.), Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.), Sophia Monopoli (Worcester, Mass.), Katelyn Santos (Acushnet, Mass.), and Cassidy Windler (Holden, Mass.) in their final regular season home game at Coughlin Field.

Antonelli celebrated her Senior Day with a pair of first quarter tallies to put the Lancers ahead 2-0. Sarah Duff (Warren, Mass.) and Monopoli assisted on the goals.

Junior Coley Hayes (Norwood, Mass.) scored off a penalty corner for her seventh goal of the season with exactly a minute remaining in the half to send the teams to the break with a score of 3-0. Duff added her second assist of the game on the tally.

Ten minutes into the third quarter, Antonelli completed her hat trick to push Worcester's advantage to 4-0. Hopkins tacked on a goal of her own with 30 seconds left in the quarter, putting the Lancers ahead 5-0, a score which would hold up as the final.

Worcester State goalkeeper Jess Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) got the win for the Lancers, but did not need to make any saves. Sophomore Kacy Florence (Methuen, Mass.) went into the game in the closing minutes to preserve the shutout.

Next up for Worcester State, they'll play a massive Little East Conference contest on the road against Keene State on Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
