WESTFIELD, Mass. – Eastern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse rushed out to a 6-0 lead, then held on late to defeat Westfield State, 18-15 in a non-conference game in Willimantic, Conn. on Tuesday afternoon.
Sydney Goyette and Alezx Vizzini each tallied a pair of goals in the first 16 minutes to stake the Warriors to the big lead. Westfield (3-8) answered with eight goals in the second quarter, grabbing an 8-7 lead on Mykenzie Black's goal with 2:51 left in the second quarter. Eastern tied the game at 8-8 just before the half.
From there the two teams traded goals into the fourth quarter, with Eastern (8-2) grabbing the upper hand late with goals from Hannah Seltzer and Avonlea LeBeau in the final five minutes for the final margin.
Emma Prattson finished with five goals and two assists to lead the Owls. Black and Kylie Buchanan tallied two goals each.
Sydney Smith made 13 saves while facing 31 shots on goal.
Kaylee Drobish led Eastern with five goals and two assists. Vizzini and LeBeau each netted three goals. Maizie Rukat made seven saves for the Warriors.
ECSU outshot the Owls 36-28, and held a 22-14 advantage in draw controls.
Westfield will return to MASCAC conference play with a 7:00 p.m. game on Friday at Bridgewater State.
