Worcester, MA- Kicking off the 2024-25 season in their home opener, Worcester State Women's Ice Hockey (0-0-0,0-0-0) hosts Arcadia University at the Fidelity Bank Ice Center. The Lancers begin their first season in the MASCAC, after sweeping the last three championships in the ECHA and look to continue their success with the new season.
Final
Worcester State: 2
Arcadia: 4
How It Happened:
The first period got off to a hesistant start by both teams as they looked to settle into a new season. Arcadia was the first to find their paces as the knights got off to a hot start scoring their first goal after five minutes of play. Their second came just a few brief minutes after the first. The Lancers would try to battle back as the period expired but they were in able to close the gap
The second period started off with a change in both teams' game strategy. With the lead, the Arcadia Knights would play a highly defensive game as they would look to hold onto this 2-0 lead while the Lancers strategy would shift to more an aggressive offensive mindset as they would look to dig into the goal deficit. This strategy would pay off with the first Lancers goal by sophomore Caroline Melanson (Wakefield, MA). This goal would ignite hope for the Lancers team but also lighting fire to the Arcadia team. Arcadia shifted their focus to the offensive end trying to stretch this league back to two. It would not take long for Arcadia to find the goal as they refused to leave the Lancers territory without one. After this goal, the Lancers frustration was evident as they look to find another offensive mark.
The third period would start with the Lancers and Knights implementing the same strategies they did in the second period with the Lancers playing aggressive offense while Arcadia played defensive keep away. This period was much like the second where the Lancers were able to lessen the lead with a score late in the final period as sophomore Kaia Carlson (Denver, CO) would send in a crisp rebound from sophomore Madelyn Franta (Superior, WI). This, much like in the second period, wouldn't last long as Arcadia knights would again score to put the game back at a two score deficit which would hold until the final buzzer for a 4-2 final score.
Junior Kelsey Czerniawski (Chicopee, MA) would end the night with 51 saves in the action.
What's Next:
Worcester State(0-1-1, 0-0-0) is back in action after a quick turn around as they host Arcadia again tomorrow at 2pm in a rematch battle.
