WESTFIELD, Mass. – A Westfield State own goal was the difference in the game as Worcester State (3-4-1, 2-1 MASCAC) downed the Owls 1-0 on a Saturday morning at Alumni Field in Westfield, Mass. The goal was scored ten minutes into the second half as a cross from Lancers midfielder Alessandro Romeo (Worcester Mass.) was deflected off a Westfield State defender, changing its direction and sneaking into the lower left corner of the net.
The Owls had a few scoring chances after the Lancers' goal, particularly in the 70th minute when first-year Nick Brown (Southwick, Mass.) delivered a thru ball to midfielder Zach Soucy (Acushnet, Mass.) who fired a point-blank shot that was denied by Lancers goalkeeper Andy Ramirez (Waltham, Mass.). Ramirez played a vital role in the victory for Worcester State as he collected five saves in the game.
Owls' goalie Emilio Mancuso (Ludlow, Mass.) recorded nine saves as the Lancers out-shot the Owls 17-14. Worcester State also held an advantage in corner kicks, edging Westfield 10-6.
Westfield State (3-7, 0-3 MASCAC) will look to bounce back as they embark on a three game road trip starting Tuesday against Castleton State at 7:00 P.M. The Lancers carry a three game winning streak into their next match-up on Saturday at Bridgewater State at noon.
