Vikings Open Up 2021 Season With Doubleheader Against Eastern Nazarene

SALEM, Mass. – For the first time in 697 days, the Salem State softball team took the field, playing for the first time since their 2019 season ended and the COVID-19 pandemic caused the cancelation of their entire 2020 campaign. The Vikings hosted the Eastern Nazarene Lions in a scheduled doubleheader at Alumni Field to open the 2021 on Thursday afternoon.

Behind the pitching of Jennelle Munoz (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) and Adriana Montuya (American Canyon, Calif.) the visiting Lions defeated Salem State 6-2 and 1-0.

Game 1

Munoz struck out five and added an RBI single in the first as Eastern Nazarene plated three runs in the opening frame, highlighted by a Darcy Castro (Garden Grove, Calif.) double. The Vikings countered with a pair in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by Dominique Del Vecchio (Stoneham, Mass.).

The Lions added two more in the third and capped the scoring with an RBI in the seventh by Yaya Bowden (Danbury, Conn.).

The Vikings threatened in the sixth, loading the bases on two hits and an error, but Munoz retired the side with a strikeout, before securing her second win of the year in a complete game performance.

Dominique Del Vecchio and Mikayla Porcaro (Amesbury, Mass.) each recorded two hits for the Vikings.

Grace DuBois (Newton, N.H.) suffered the loss, going four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. Freshman Emily Carter (Warwick, R.I.) finished the game, scattering three hits over the final three innings with one run allowed.

Game 2

Montuya allowed just four hits and struck out five, going the distance in game two, as Eastern Nazarene edged the Vikings 1-0. Montuya walked just one batter in picking up her second win of the season.

Danielle Maliszewsk (Torrington, Conn.) plated the only run with a fielder's choice in the second as Montuya made the advantage hold up.

Salem State put two runners on in the sixth as Abigail Johnson (Meredith, N.H) and Porcaro both singled, but once again a strikeout by Montuya ended the threat.

Carter pitched well in the loss for the Vikings, allowing just one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk. Freshaman Sierra Ricci (Greene, R.I.) pitched two scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts for Salem State.
