Worcester State Beat Anna Maria in Worcester City Tournament

Worcester, MA- For a second straight evening, the Worcester State Lancers Women's Basketball team competed in the Worcester City Tip Off Tournament at WPI. On this night Worcester State competed against the Anna Maria Amcats in the consultation game in the second game of their 2022-23 season. Worcester State captured their first win of the season by a score of 97-49.

As the game got underway, both teams showed that their play was not affected from playing the previous night. Luckily for the Lancers, they stormed out to a 9-2 run the first two minutes of the game. The suffocating defense helped throughout the beginning of the first quarter holding Anna Maria to 7 points. Anna Maria fought back and cut the Worcester State lead to 3 heading into the second quarter. As the second quarter started, both teams were able to play a back-and-forth second quarter for the first five minutes. Then, the Lady Lancers went on a 13-6 scoring run at the end of the first half to increase their four-point lead from 31-27 to an 11-point 44-33 at the half.

With the coaching staff not pleased with the defensive effort in the first half, the players came out more focused on that end, and the top-notch defense led to a quick 8-0 run to begin the third quarter to increase their lead to 19 points at 52-33. This caused Anna Maria to burn one of their three second-half timeouts. It was all Worcester State the rest of the period as they pushed their lead to 80-43 thanks to holding the Amcats to 22.2 % from the field for the quarter. In the 4th quarter, the Lancers were able to increase their lead to 40 plus points with a little under 5 minutes to play, and this remained the case until the final buzzer to win the game 97-49.

6 Lancer players were in double figures for point totals that contributed to a diverse scoring Distribution: Erin Gallella (16 points) (Tewksbury, Mass.) Nya Thomas (12 points) (Attleboro, Mass.), Katie Hurynowicz (18 points game-high) (Tyngsboro, Mass.), Emma Found (11 points) (Wakefield, Mass.), Abby St. Martin (11 points) (Putnam, Conn.), and Sarah Bloomberg (Lunenburg, Mass.) (15 points).

In total, Worcester State shot 52.9 % from the field. Contrast that to Anna Maria who shot 30.2%.
