Men's Soccer Shuts Out Westfield in MASCAC Opening Round

WORCESTER, Mass. - The fourth-seeded Worcester State University men's soccer team claimed a 3-0 win over #5 Westfield State University in the First Round of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday at Coughlin Field.

With the win, Worcester State improves to 9-9-1 overall this season, and advances to the MASCAC Semifinal, where they will play top-seeded Framingham State on Friday at 4 p.m. Westfield's season comes to a close with a record of 5-12-1.

Worcester State broke the ice in the 38th minute, when junior Lincoln Henry (Kingston, Jamaica) headed home his sixth goal of the season. After a Laszlo Dorogi (West Boylston, Mass.) shot was blocked up high into the air, Henry out-jumped the Owl keeper, nodding the ball into the cage for a 1-0 lead, which Worcester State would take into the locker room.

The Lancers held a heavy 9-2 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes, but only landed two of the nine shots on target.

With 15:30 showing on the clock, Henry put the game on ice with his second goal of the night. The midfielder walked through the Westfield State defense and fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box past the diving Westfield State keeper for a 2-0 lead.

An insurance marker was headed home in the 88th minute by Kristi Shore (Korce, Albania) off a Justin Echeverry (Methuen, Mass.) corner kick for his first goal of the season, giving the game its final score of 3-0.

Worcester State goalkeeper Henri Guilmette (Franklin, Mass.) earned his fourth shutout of the season, but did not have to make a save. Worcester State outshot the Owls 16-7 in the contest, and led the shots on goal count 7-0.
