Lancers Battle it With Lyons, Falling in the Fourth

Worcester, MA- After a hard fought battle last Wednesday that handed the Women's Lacrosse team (3-1, 0-0) their first loss of the season, the team looked to rebound today in a rescheduled matchup with the Wheaton Lyons. Wheaton is coming off their own MASCAC battle from yesterday where they fell in a tight meeting with Framingham State to find both programs looking to add a win to their column.

Final

Worcester State: 13

Wheaton: 14

How it Happened:

To kick off the game, the Wheaton Lyons would win the draw putting them on the attack early. For the first 7 minutes of the quarter, the Lyons would start their offense strong, putting the score up to 3-0. The Lancers would score their first goal off of a quick catch and shot from sophomore midfielder Kerry Brown (Billerica, MA) who was set up by junior attacker Molly Witkowski (Greenville, NY) to make the game 3-1. To finish off the first quarter, Wheaton would tack on 2 more scores, making the game 5-1. Despite the deficit, the Lancers would have a great deal of time to initiate a comeback.

To start the second quarter, the Lancers would win the draw picked up by Junior Midfielder McKayla Fisher (Peabody, MA). The Lancers would proceed to work their way down the field and score from Witkowski, created by junior attacker Abigail Vincent (Lakeville, MA), putting the scoreline to 5-2. For the next couple of minutes, the Lyons would continue to find their offensive footing, scoring two quick goals in succession. The Lancers would respond from the adversity from a well-placed shot in the corner by junior midfielder Shannon Donahue (Dennis, MA). The following draw the Lancers would win, sending them down the field firing another one in the net through Brown assisted by senior Abbie Wing (Griswold, CT). It seemed from this point the Lancers would find their offensive rhythm, finding another quick goal from senior Ashley Hurley (Feeding Hills, MA), which was constructed through Donahue. A few minutes later,  Fisher would provide an assist to Vincent putting the scoreline within a 1 goal reach for the Lancers to 7-6. Vincent would make it a brace being sent through by Brown equalizing the game at 7-7. The following possession the Lancers would score once more through a nice finish by Wing set up by Hurley. Before the end of the second quarter, the Lyons would find one making things even with the score being tied 8-8 at the half.

To start the third quarter, Wheaton would strike first, putting them up one within the first minute. The Lancers would quickly respond with a bounce shot scored by Wing making it difficult for the away goaltender to make a play on it. With 7 minutes left in the third quarter, the Lancers would find another one through Witkowski assisted by Hurley. Right after that possession, Wing would score another one, propelling the scoreline to 11-10 giving the Lancers the lead. For the next couple of minutes, the Lyons would strike back, scoring 2 goals making it 12-11. With about 2 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Vincent would score another one for the Lancers. The quarter would end 12-12 setting up an exciting fourth where either team could take home the win.

To kick off the fourth quarter, both teams would play great defense making it tough for both offenses to score. The first goal of the quarter would come from Wheaton with about five minutes left to play, putting the Lancers down 13-12. Wheaton would tack another one on with two minutes left to play but the Lancers would win the draw and take it down the field, scoring through a great goal that was shot off the post by Fisher, keeping the Lancers within reach. Unfortunately, it would not be enough and the Lancers would lose 14-13 as the Lyons managed to kill the remaining time in the game for the victory..
