WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State sprinted out to a first quarter lead but the Skidmore Thoroughbreds rallied late to pluck the Owls women's lacrosse team, 11-10 in overtime in Saratoga Springs on Wednesday night.
Skidmore netted the final three goals of the game to snatch the win, scoring twice in the final three minutes of regulation to force the overtime. In the extra period, the Thoroughbredsb controlled the draw and held the ball for the first minute before Lily Hudner attacked the goal from the right win and buried a high shot for the game winner.
Hudner was one of three Skidmore (2-2) players with two goals apiece on the evening.
Westfield (0-2) was led by three goals and an assist each from Mykenzie Black and Natalie DeMaio. Emma Prattson netted a goal and four assists for the Owls.
Kara Banagan made 11 saves for the Owls, while Skidmore's Isabella Iannone made 10 stops.
Westfield jumped out to leads of 2-0 and 4-2 in the first quarter, with Shea O'Brien and Black breaking the seal for the Owls.
The two teams went to the half tied at 5-5. Westfield led 10-8 after DeMaio's goal with 3:30 left in regulation time.
Westfield State is next slated to play their home opener on Friday, hosting Western Connecticut State at 5:00 p.m. at Alumni Field.
