Women's Basketball Opens 2019 Season Victorious

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's basketball team opened its season with a 62-44 win over Becker College in a first round game of the Worcester City Tournament at John P. Brissette Court.

With the win, the Lancers improve to 1-0 on the young season, while the Hawks fall to 0-1.

Becker came out of the gate flying, using a 12-0 run capped by a Cassidy Harrison 3-pointer in the first four minutes of the contest to go ahead 12-2. Worcester State freshman Erin Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.) ended the run with her first collegiate 3-pointer, and after a Becker bucket from Natasha Pacheco, Worcester State closed the period on an 11-0 run to take a 16-14 lead after one.

The second quarter was all Lancers, as the hosts outscored Becker 14-5 to take a 30-19 lead into the locker room. Worcester State held the Hawks to just 2-of-13 shooting, while Gallella scored six points off the bench to lead the Lancers.

Becker outscored Worcester State 15-12 in the third quarter, but a comeback wasn't in the cards, as the Lancers put up 20 in the fourth to seal the deal.

Worcester State was led by senior Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.), who recorded a game-high 19 points in her first game in a Worcester State uniform. Gallella chipped in 17 points for a strong showing in her first college game.

Pacheco was the leading scorer for the Hawks, and recorded the game's only double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Harrison added 15 points of her own in the defeat.

The Lancers advance to the championship game on Sunday at 7 p.m., and will take on the defending champions from WPI, who beat Clark University 54-41 in the other semifinal Saturday. Becker and Clark will play in the consolation game at 5 p.m.
