WESTFIELD, Mass. –   JT Thompson scored 27 points for Westfield State, but it wasn't enough, as the Owls fell to Mitchell College, 80-79 in a non-conference game in New London, Conn. on Saturday afternoon.

With six seconds left in the game Thompson hit a pair of technical free throws to give the Owls a 79-78 lead, but the Mariners answered with a pair of free throws from Taylor Bishop to give Mitchell an 80-79 lead.

Westfield had one final possession to try to regain the lead, but Kumar Brown's short jumper from the left side wouldn't drop and the Mariners escaped with the win.

Westfield led by as many as 11, 67-56 after a three pointer from Thompson with 4:29 left in the game.

The Owls went just 2-7 at the foul line, including missing the front end of several one-and-ones, as the Mariners closed the game with a 14-4 run in the final 1:20 of the game.

Alfonso Stokes led the Mariners with 25 points, the only Mitchell player in double figures.

Westfield got 13 points and eight rebounds from Brown, and 10 points from Timmy Jacobus.

The Owls will next play at nationally #3 ranked St. Joseph (Conn.) on Monday, Dec. 12 at 7:00 p.m.
