Ice Hockey Clipped By Pilgrims In 2023 Opener

Millhorn notches first collegiate goal for Green and Gold

Henniker, NH. The Fitchburg State ice hockey team dropped a tough 4-3, overtime decision to the Pilgrims of New England College this evening in non-conference action from the Lee Clement Arena.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 16:19 mark of the first period as freshman Nicklas Millhorn (Brownstown, MI) collected a loose puck in front of the net deposited a shot into the right side of the net for his first collegiate goal with assists from classmates Jackson Collins (Wake Forest, NC) and Graham Broadfoot (Dublin, OH) to make score 1-0.

In the middle stanza, New England College knotted the score at 1-1 just 25 seconds in when junior Jesper Tarkiainen (Naperville, IL) found the back of the net for his first goal on the season with an assist from newcomer Paul Waldhauser (Klagenfurt, Austria).

The Falcons regained the lead with six and half minutes remaining the second period with junior Jack Johansen (Milford, NH) receiving a feed from Broadfoot and freshman Hunter Dunn (Douglas, MA) and depositing a shot into the left side of the net for his first marker of the year to make the score 2-1.

The Pilgrims retied the contest at 2-2 when Waldhauser collected a pass from junior David Novotny (Boca Raton, Fl) and sophomore Kam Hellman (Macomb, MI) and connected on his first collegiate score.

In the third period of play, the Green and Gold answered back with junior Toivo Kramer (New York, NY) tucking a shot inside the lower right corner for his first tally of the 2023 campaign as senior Cole Archambeault (Leominster, MA) picked up the assist for the 3-2 advantage.

The hosts tied the contest with 33 seconds left in regulation as newcomer Shane Adler (Dallas, Tex.) netted his first collegiate marker, tucking a shot into the left side of the net for his first collegiate score. In the overtime period, New England College secured the victory 1:01 into the stanza with Novatny netting his goal on the season, resulting in the 4-3 final.
