Women's Basketball Falls Short to Chargers

FITCHBURG, MA: Fitchburg State women's basketball fell to the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer this evening in non-conference action.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 12/6/23

- Score: Colby-Sawyer 64, Fitchburg 59`

- Records: Colby-Sawyer (2-6), Fitchburg (3-6)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The Falcons jumped out to an 18-4 lead through the first quarter. The Chargers struggled to hold onto the ball through Fitchburg's full-court press early on as they turned the ball over nine times. The second quarter looked to be starting the same way, but Colby-Sawyer cut the deficit to nine on three straight three-point baskets. The Chargers would continue to work their way back with breakaway layups after beating the press. Lia Raynowska would bring the visiting team within two on another three-point shot at 29-27. The remainder of the half would end with both teams trading baskets, giving the Falcons a 37-34 lead at the break.

- The second half saw Colby-Sawyer continue with good shot selection. With 7:19 left in the third quarter, the Chargers saw their first lead after Eliza Mitchell made a contested layup. The following minutes would see the teams trade buckets and the lead. Colby-Sawyer would take the lead with just over two minutes left in the contest on a string of baskets. The Chargers would go on to hold the lead, giving them the 64-59 victory.

- Colby-Sawyer was paced by Mitchell, who finished with 17 points. Marissa Holt contributed a double-double effort tonight with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  

- The Falcons leading scorers were Stephanie Hart (Shirley, MA) and Riley Harlow (Hanson, MA). Hart had her first double-double of the season after scoring a team-high 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and grabbing 14 rebounds. Harlow also completed a double-double, finishing with 15 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, and four assists.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  Colby-Sawyer shot 44.4% (24-54) from the floor, 35% (7-20) from behind the arc, and 52.9% (9-17) from the free throw line.  

-  Fitchburg finished the game shooting 35.2% (25-71) from the floor, 20% (4-20) from three, and 41.7% from the free throw line.

-  Colby-Sawyer outrebounded the Falcons by just one at 42 to 41.
