Ice Hockey Falls Short to UMass-Dartmouth

NEW BEDFORD, MA: Fitchburg State men's hockey falls to the Corsairs of UMass-Dartmouth in MASCAC action.  

THE BASICS:

- Date: 1/11/24

- Score: UMass 6, Fitchburg 4

- Records: UMass (8-6, 6-4 MASCAC), Fitchburg (7-5-2, 6-2-2 MASCAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The Corsairs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring 1:32 into the first period and again in the 11th minute. Tyler Stewart found the back of the net first for UMass, followed by Kevin Johnston. The Falcons would get on the board just before the first break at the 19:11 mark on an Alexandre Bauvais (Meudon, France) goal. Adam Nedelka (Srch, Czech Republic) and Max Macchioni (N. Kingstown, RI) were credited with the assists.  

- The second period saw a decrease in scoring, with UMass bumping themselves back out to a two-goal lead. They again found the back of the net just 2:20 into the period, off of Nolan Wutzke's stick.

- The second period was a calm before the storm as six total goals were scored in the third period. Fitchburg would come out of the break and tie the game up at three with two quick goals from Michael Macchioni (N. Kingstown, RI) on a power play and Nolan Sargent (Littleton, CO). The Corsairs would answer back with a two-goal swing of their own to go back up 5-3. Michael Perrone netted the first 10:28 into the period. Stewart followed up in the 18th minute on a power play opportunity for his second of the game. The Falcons would finish their scoring on the night with a second goal from Bauvais at 19:14. Fitchburg emptied the net to try and knot the game up at five but saw the Corsairs take advantage of that and net one more, putting it out of reach with just under 20 seconds left. Bryce Grennan capitalized on his opportunity, scoring the empty netter.  

- Macchioni will be tagged with the loss in net for the Falcons, setting him back to 4-3-2 on the season. He made 28 saves in this one. Marshall McKallip got the win for UMass, putting him at 1-1 on the season. He made 36 saves on the night.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  Shots: Fitchburg 42, UMass 34

-  Penalties: UMass had 12 minutes on 6 infractions. Fitchburg had 14 minutes on 7 infractions.

-  Power Plays: Fitchburg was 1-for-5 (.200), UMass was 1-for-6 (.167)
