Falcons Drop 3-0 Decision To Vikings

Salem, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Vikings of Salem State this afternoon in Little East Conference (LEC) action from Alumni Field.

How It Happened

Salem State opened the scoring in the 15th minute of play as junior Mikayla Mason (Beverly, Mass.) connected on her team-leading fourth tally on the season off a penalty corner for the 1-0 advantage.

The Vikings doubled their margin at the 24:55 mark of the second period when junior Mackenzie Schmink (Danvers, Mass.) settled a rebound off her own shot and deposited the ball into the back of the cage for her second tally of the 2021 campaign to make the score 2-0.

Following the intermission, the hosts extended their lead in the 41st minute (3-0) with Mason netting her second goal of the contest. Fitchburg State nearly cut into the deficit with seven minutes remaining in the contest when senior Emily Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass.) put a shot on fame, but Salem State keeper Kelli McCarthy (Foxborough, Mass.) turned the shot aside to preserve the shutout, resulting in the 3-0 final.

This morning's contest marked the 41st meeting between the two squads in the sport of field hockey with the Falcons 16-23-2 all time when taking on the Vikings

Fitchburg State had won five of the previous six contests against Salem State with the Vikings coming away with a 2-1 triumph in the last meeting on Sept. 28, 2019.
