WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's basketball team came up short by a final score of 57-52 to Wellesley College in non-conference action Tuesday evening at John P. Brissette Court.
With the win, Wellesley improves to 5-1 overall on the season. The Lancers drop to 4-4.
The Lancers were held to just seven points in the opening quarter, as Wellesley jumped ahead to a 14-7 lead. Freshman Charlotte MacMillan (Brunswick, Maine) scored five of Worcester State's seven points in the period, including a three-pointer.
The visitors continued to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring the Lancers 17-10 to take a 31-17 lead into the locker room. Senior Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) led Worcester State with four second quarter points.
Worcester State made their first four shots of the third quarter to chisel away at the Blue lead. Senior Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) scored eight points in the third as the Lancers outscored the visitors 17-13 to cut the deficit to 44-34.
Final-minute threes from Erin Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.) and MacMillan saw Worcester State come to within one point of Wellesley at 53-52, but the visitors hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
MacMillan finished as the game's leading scorer with 16 points, hitting a game-high four threes. Gallella scored a dozen points, while Mosley finished in double figures with 10 points. Wellesley was led by 14 points from Emily Kopp and Pujita Shukla.
Worcester State will turn right back around to take on MIT at home on Wednesday night. Tipoff from Brissette Court is slated for 7 p.m.
