By Jim Fenton

FITCHBURG, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's soccer team and Fitchburg State University played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon.

The teams scored their goals in the opening 1:25 of the second half, just 55 seconds apart.

BSU had a wide edge in shots on goal, 16-4, and shots, 26-9, but were able to get just one past sophomore goalkeeper Madison Dawkins (Haverhill, Mass.).

The Bears (3-3-2 overall) and the Falcons (1-6-2) are both 1-0-1 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference.

BSU owns a 26-4-4 record against Fitchburg State in a series that started in 1993.

After a scoreless opening half, the Bears got on the scoreboard first when junior Jenna Sweeney (Wilmington, Mass.) netted her first goal of the season.

Following a BSU free kick, the play was broken up by a Falcons' defender, but Sweeney took possession of the ball and fired a shot inside the left post just 30 seconds into the second half.

Fitchburg State came right back to tie the game 1:25 into the second half as junior Adrianna Westcott (Sayreville, N.J.) registered her first goal of the season.

A long pass was sent from the Fitchburg State defensive end to the left side where senior Kendra Peretzman (Randolph, Mass.) collected the ball.

Peretzman fired it to the front of the net where Westcott moved in close and kicked it in for the goal.

Dawkins made 14 saves while the Falcons' team was credited with one stop.

Six Bears had at least two shots on goal, including freshman Juliana Matos (Taunton, Mass.) with four and Sweeney with three.

BSU junior goalkeeper Logan Levesque (Bristol, R.I.) made three saves.

It was the first meeting of the teams since the Bears ousted Fitchburg State from the MASCAC tourney in the semifinal round last season.

The Bears have a non-conference game at Gordon College on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Fitchburg State is at Roger Williams for a non-conference matchup Tuesday atw 4 p.m.
