Worcester, MA- After a stunning trip overseas to Portugal, the Worcester State Women's Basketball team (5-5, 0-0) is back in action, this time heading out to Brandeis to take on the Judges in a Monday night battle.
Final
Worcester State: 48
Brandeis: 65
How it Happened:
The meeting between the Judges and Lancers got off to a fast start with sophomore Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) opening the action off a charging layup. Brandeis would jump out to an early lead but by the close of the first quarter Worcester had a full starting effort that saw the game tied back up at 12 with under two minutes to go.
The second quarter would find the Lancers down by four but prepped to keep pace with the Judges. Halfway through the second quarter senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, MA) would bring the game back to a 20-20 tie before Brandeis would go on a six point run before Worcester would a seven point deficit into half at a score of 22-29.
After the small run to end the first half, that saw Brandeis extend their lead to nine, Worcester quickly set to work cutting into the surge and building their way back into the action. Halfway through the third, off another Waldron layup, Worcester would be down just two and a Hurynowicz driving layup would claim the fifth tie of the game at 33-33. Hurynowicz layups would then put Worcester back into the lead setting off a back and forth battle between the programs.
The fourth quarter saw each team trading baskets and putting their defense to the test, but the Judges managed to go on a mid quarter run to grab a double digit lead with just under five minutes remaining. Worcester would attempt to counter the flow but the quick burst lead, with the minimal time remaining, the Lancers could not mount the comeback, falling to the Judges 48-65.
Hurynowicz, just 48 points away from her career 1,000th point, would lead the Lancers with 20 points while sophomore Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA) lead the team with six rebounds in the action.
